IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING H1N1 VIRUS

27 Oct 2009

There is presently much speculation as to the impact that the H1N1 virus will have on Canadians over the next few months. Organizations have been urged to stress to their members steps that should be taken to prevent the spread of the virus, and to have plans in place to alleviate any hardships that may come of the spread of H1N1.

Hockey Canada has for many years had specific steps in place to reduce the spread of any infection in the hockey environment and we urge you to remind your teams of the following.
Team staff need to emphasize to players and parents the need for total cooperation in all aspects concerning hygiene, but specifically to the prevention of the transmission of the H1N1 virus. The following are recommended steps within the team environment:

1. Players should be urged to report all illnesses to their parents and the safety person/trainer. Parents are urged to keep their children away from the hockey environment if they are showing any signs of infectious disease or virus. Sick players are encouraged to see their physician if showing signs or symptoms of the H1N1 virus, and to be fully recovered prior to returning to play.

2. Players should be encouraged to wash hands routinely and always after handling hockey equipment. Frequent hand washing with soap and water is one of the best preventions we can recommend. Teams are encouraged to carry extra hand soap or hand sanitizer as not all arenas have this readily available.

3. Talk to your players about using their arm when covering their mouths and nose when coughing or sneezing as opposed to their hands.

4. Advise players to try and not touch their own mouths or nose when in the hockey environment to reduce the chance of them passing an infection on to themselves.
5. Ensure all players and staff have their own water bottles labeled with names and players numbers. Sport drink bottles should be avoided as direct lip contact is possible when drinking.
6. Officials and coaches should avoid drinking from other water bottles and have water readily available to them on their respective benches.

7. Towels should be removed from all benches. Players should not share towels, clothing, bar soap or other personal items such as razors.

8. Assist athletes in protecting their immune system by stressing they get sufficient sleep, that they do not over train and that they get proper nutrition.

You may find additional information on the Health Canada website at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/index-eng.php, or on your applicable provincial/territorial sites.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Todd Jackson, senior manager of safety and insurance, at tjackson@hockeycanada.ca.

Minor Peewee A win gold in our Nations Capital!

13 Oct 2009

The Markham Waxers Minor Peewee A Hockey Club have a lot to be thankful for! They skated into Ottawa with gold in sight and that is what they got! Forfeiting a home cooked Thanksgiving dinner, the boys played with heart and class to take the title. After playing 3 round robin games and a semifinal and winning them all, 2nd place would just not do! We played 5 games in total scoring 24 goals and only giving up 7, with excellent offence, defence and stellar goaltending by the Waxer netminders. So, it’s off to the finals we go!!! The Waxers came out strong and notched the 1st goal in the opening shift of the game. We held onto the lead until the end of the 1st when Nepean came back to tie it up. In the 2nd period, we worked hard and put a few more past their goaltender. With the score now 4-1 Waxers, things were getting tense! In the 3rd they got one back, but not before we put another past their goaltender, making the score now 5-2. Things were getting more intense, our boys continued to stick to the game plan and played hard…they were rewarded with yet another goal. There was less than a minute to go, but it seemed like hours when that goal slid past the Nepean netminder…we win 6-2!!! The Markham Waxers Minor Peewee A win it all with a perfect record and a lot to be thankful for! Not only did they win every game, but they showed how good hockey should be played…with talent and skill. When you work hard as a team, it pays off! Congratulations to the entire team who put forth a fabulous effort and contributed to this successful win…not to mention the amazing coaching staff who kept the boys focused and pumped!

Team members include- Myles Ambrozic, Antonio Cicchetti, Connor Hencher, Jonathan Locker, Gregory Lu, Kent Nakamichi, Benjamin O’Callaghan, Colin Pickering, Michael Popalis, Elliot Reeves, Kyle Schnarr, Michael Shum, Adam Soehner, Nicholas Turco, Chris Urquhart, Joey Xamin and Matthew Ye. Markham Waxer NHL Draft Picks

08 Sep 2008

For the first time since being recently drafted into the NHL, former Markham Waxer players Steven Stamkos, Cody Hodgson, Michael Del Zotto and Cameron Guance were together again on August 11 at York Downs Golf and Country Club in Unionville where they were honoured for their recent achievements.

The Markham Waxer NHL draft picks include:
Steven Stamkos ~ 1st overall to Tampa Bay Lightning
Cody Hodgson ~ 10th overall to Vancouver Canucks
Michael Del Zotto ~ 20th overall to New York Rangers
Cameron Gaunce ~ 50th overall to Colorado Avalanche

The Markham Waxer Atom AAA team hosted the event where the former Waxers answered questions from the 10 year old hockey players and discussed the recent NHL draft that took place in Ottawa in June. James Duthie of TSN moderated the event where the four draft picks discussed their time in Waxer hockey, their hard work, challenges and successes.

Their former coach Paul Titanic was able to explain to the Markham Waxer Atom AAA players the memories that he took away from the experience of coaching the four NHL draft picks and the hard work and dedication it takes to be chosen as a future NHL player.

The event was attended by numerous news media personnel including TSN, Rogers Cable, The Markham Economist and Sun and the OMHA magazine - Hometown Hockey.

As an organization, The Markham Waxers are very proud to be the first organization to have 4 players drafted by a NHL team who all played together on the same team.
